Primary Sports Leadership Programme
Our Primary Sports Leadership Programme has been designed to use sport and physical activity to help young people develop and improve their leadership skills. The programme also aims to improve self-confidence and behaviour through responsibility.
Primary Leaders will learn and demonstrate important life skills, such as effective communication and organisation, while learning to lead basic physical activities to their peers.
- The programme is aimed at Year 5/6 Pupils.
- The programme runs for 5 x 1-hour sessions. (These sessions can be during curriculum time or as an after-school club)
- To complete the course, the group must lead one of the Featherstone SSP competitions or festivals.
- Each Primary Sports Leader will receive a Sports Leadership T-shirt and certificate, and two children will be awarded a ‘Star Leader’ Trophy.
Testimonials
“Joining the FSSP Sports Leader Programme was one of our best decisions this year. Our group of 20 Year 6 pupils spent one hour per week, for six weeks, training with the FSSP Team on how to run the Year 3/4 Sportshall Athletics Competition. In each new event they were introduced to, they were taught how the event worked, the skills involved, how to officiate the event, and how to give pupils the best additional support if needed. They could also practice and demonstrate incredible teamwork, highly effective communication with each other, the pupils taking part and staff from other schools, and increased confidence. These skills are all transferable and so will support the children in other aspects of school life. Watching them officiate at the event on the day, I felt extremely proud of how far they had come, and it was lovely to get such positive feedback about them from other PE leads in our partnership.”

“Taking part in the Sports Leader Programme was brilliant! We all enjoyed working with Martin and Juma each week to learn about all the events in the Year 3/4 Sportshall Athletics Competition. We all increased our teamwork skills, communication and confidence, which helped us demonstrate our school values of unity, respect and determination. We are looking forward to organising and officiating our cluster Boccia and Kurling Festival at the end of this term, too!”
